DPD was founded in 1976 by 18 large German transport companies. The aim of this merger was to create a customer-centric delivery transport system with improved service standards for business customers. The merger with GeoPost, a subsidiary of France's La Poste, in April 2001 strengthened DPD's long-term integrity, stability and guarantees for future growth.
During its first year of operation, the company sent almost 1.5 million parcels. In 1980, it carried out 7 million shipments. In 2013, the company's own network of pickup and delivery points for parcels began to operate. In 2015, the delivery of parcels from China started.
With a staff of 77,000 delivery specialists and over 46,000 local parcel shops, DPDgroup dispatches 5.3 million parcels per day to over 230 countries.
